In a 12 Step Group, we share gratitude at the beginning of our meetings. This might help in a congregation group instead of asking for someone to lead a prayer. Gratitude helps us lift our faces out of our bowls of pity pea soup.

When my brothers and I wanted to play with our new toys instead of writing thank-you notes to the relatives who had sent them, Ma would sometimes say, "Gratitude is an appreciation of favors yet to come." It's true, but it seems a little crass to say thank you just to keep the goodies coming.

Another situation where I find gratitude useful is when people are "just doing their jobs"; that's no excuse for letting them go without appreciation. A thank-you and a smile can make their day lighter.

100% agree. Several years ago I was one of the leaders for a meditation group. Part of the meditation was about getting in touch with gratitude. After meditation we would talk about anything the group wanted to talk about. One woman told me she did not understand the thing about gratitude or the act of being grateful. She said, "I have nothing to be grateful for." I immediately silenced my shock then softly said, "Perhaps, we can begin the something small....like the shoes on your feet, the clothes you are wearing, the bed you sleep in.......... I have never forgotten that woman and when she comes to mind I pray she has come to a place of gratitude. Wishing All Best Days.....
