I spent a recent vacation at our farmhouse reading Timothy Egan’s book, A Fever In the Heartland, which describes the 1920s rise of the Ku Klux Klan, its slimy leader, D.C. Stephenson, and his fall from grace after raping and murdering an Indianapolis woman, Madge Oberholtzer. The book was published in 2023, and one can’t help but wonder if Egan’s book was written with Donald Trump in mind.
