In my junior year of high school, Jim Jones persuaded his many followers to commit suicide in the South American nation of Guyana. I remember being relieved that most people thought Jones hailed from California and not Indiana, where he was born in the town of Crete in 1931. Today, Crete is five houses and a farm, and is doing its best to forget Jim Jones. If there ever were a sign at the edge of town that read “Welcome to Crete: Birthplace of Jim Jones,” it has since been removed.
