In 1997, when my first book was published by an evangelical publishing house, evangelicals assumed I shared their conservative beliefs. That’s when I first learned about confirmation bias, our tendency to assume the people we like think and believe just as we do. In a conversation about progressive Christianity, an evangelical said to me, “We’ll win this battle. Their pastors have degrees in theology and our pastors have degrees in marketing.” I didn’t realize at the time how important that was. Say what you will about evangelical Christianity, it has been brilliantly marketed. A significant number of Americans now believe the Christian Right is both Christian and right. I contend they are neither one.
