Tending Every Plant

Years ago, a couple began attending the Quaker meeting I pastored in Indianapolis. They appeared to have a warm relationship, and I enjoyed their presence in our meeting. But after a few weeks, I noticed the woman often seemed anxious, while the man seemed angry, on the verge of eruption. I also noticed the man tended to be domineering, telling his wife where to sit and with whom she could interact. If she greeted another man, he took her by the elbow and led her away. Concerned for her well-being, I asked a female social worker in the meeting to speak with her about her personal safety.
