When I was in high school, a boy in my class thought his new girlfriend would be charmed by his candor if he pointed out her faults, so told her she was overweight (she wasn’t), lacked a sense of fashion (she didn’t), and wasn’t very smart, though she was much brighter than him. She dumped him immediately, proving herself to be far wiser than he thought. She grew up to be a loving, accomplished woman while he alienated everyone he ever knew.
