David Owen

This is a radio spot delivered on radio station WBWB 96.7 FM during David Owen’s tenure at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Bloomington, Indiana.

Some years ago, a friend of mine was living an increasingly hectic life. One day her resiliency snapped, and she found herself hospitalized following a psychotic episode. There, too, she careened around for the first few days. But a week later she looked more calm. When I mentioned it, she said, “Dave, I’ve learned the secret of life!” She said, “I’ve learned that if I sit very quietly in one place, my life unfolds more peacefully than it did before.” I loved her secret and immediately saw the source of many of my own stresses. Now when my own life is threatening to get out of hand, I try to stop and ask, “What would happen if I sat very quietly for a while in one place? Would my life unfold more peacefully than before?”
