I’m writing this a few weeks before the sentencing of Donald Trump on July 11, 2024, so don’t yet know whether Judge Juan Merchan will imprison him for the 34 charges of falsification of business records, for which he’s been found guilty by a jury he played a significant role in selecting. As you’re well aware, this is the first time a former president has been found guilty of a felony, so Judge Merchan will have to weigh not only the consequences of imprisoning Trump, but also the consequences of not imprisoning him, in a nation that believes no person is above the law.
